Tanzania and Kenya

Doug and Gail Cheeseman have been leading safaris to Tanzania and Kenya since 1978. They know and love it well. With just four people in each of the nine-seater, pop-top Landcruisers, you will have plenty of space and flexibility for viewing and photographing wildlife. Our goal is to spend the maximum time in the field, starting early and ending late, often taking picnic lunches to avoid the long noon-time drive back to the lodge. Lots of choices will suit your varied interests, such as walks in bird-rich areas or a cultural photo session in a local village. Our Tanzanian and Kenyan resident naturalist/drivers, who have led many safaris with Doug and Gail, will assure the best possible wildlife experiences in this truly incredible region!

East Africa is Gail and Doug's favorite destination with its vast green savanna habitats vibrant with life, especially in February during our Southern Prime Time Safari. Zebras, giraffes, and gazelles are nursing young, while thousands of newborn Wildebeest calves run across the plains aside their mothers, attracting many predators. Flocks of European White Storks and Abdim's Storks winter in Tanzania joining the colorful resident birds. We'll enjoy the seasonal wealth of wildlife in Tanzania's Southern Serengeti and other rich areas in Tanzania, and then delight in the diversity of Kenya's highlands, lakes, arid lands, and famous Rift Valley. The stretch Land Cruisers with covered poptops are superb for wildlife viewing and with only four participants per vehicle, this safari offers flexibility and fabulous photo ops. When the Cheesemans started leading East African safaris in 1978 they didn't dream that they would still be going in 2010, but with 60 species of mammals, amazing reptiles, and over 300 species of birds, how could anyone resist?

Our Northern Prime Time Safari in Tanzania includes "The Great Migration" in Tanzania's northern Serengeti where conditions are right for the best wildlife action, especially Cheetah hunting Thomson's Gazelles. Scenic kopjes (rocky outcroppings) harbor predators and are fascinating to explore when abundant herds are present in the vicinity. Vast herds of Wildebeest and Zebra travel through as they migrate north to the Masai Mara. We will spend two days in the Ngorongoro Crater where lion prides, hyena clans, and jackal families, uninhibited by vehicles, carry on their interesting interactions. With both fresh and alkaline lakes in the crater, the waterbirds and landbirds are very abundant. Ndutu, our most favorite place on the planet, is a less-traveled area with rare small mammals, such as Wildcat, Honey Badger, Bat-eared Fox, Side-striped Jackal, Serval, and even Caracal. We also visit Olduvai Gorge in the impressive Rift Valley where the Leakeys found the famous hominid remains.

Our Northern Prime Time Safari in Kenya is the definitive short safari for wildlife enthusiasts, with six days on Kenya's side of the Serengeti ecosystem at the peak of the Migration in the Masai Mara, including night drive opportunities in the Mara Triangle. Herds of Wildebeests and Burchell's Zebras move across the Mara River stalked by Lions and Nile Crocodiles, while Thomson's and Grant's gazelles are hunted by Cheetah. The wildlife photography is simply incredible. Experience fantastic game drives at Samburu on the Uaso Nyiro River with unique Grevy's Zebras, Gerenuk, and Beisa Oryx; plus amazing elephant behavior as they come down from the hills to drink at mid-day. We'll also experience Lake Nakuru in the Rift Valley, and the well protected forest around Mountain Lodge at the base of Mount Kenya. The mammal and bird diversity is guaranteed to impress!

We focus on Okavango and other southern African specialties, both mammals and birds. Seek out the wildlife in Moremi, Savuti, and Chobe national parks in Botswana and South Luangwa National Park in Zambia. In Moremi, take a boat trip along the famous Okavango Delta to look for Sitatunga, a rare and shy aquatic antelope. Late afternoon on the great Chobe River is perfect for observing waterbirds and huge herds of elephants just down from the hills to drink and bathe. Cross the border into Zambia to spectacular Victoria Falls beside Livingstone. The finale will be at Mfuwe in South Luangwa National Park, Zambia's best game area. Night drives allow encounters with Leopards, Wildcats, White-tailed Mongoose, Honey Badgers, African Civet, Bat-eared Fox, and other rare mammals. Each safari member will have a window seat in the spacious stretch Landcruiser. Experience "semi-luxurious" mobile camping in Botswana followed by four nights of excellent lodging in Zambia. Our amazing guide knows where to find Leopards and is an expert on all aspects of African fauna, including Botswana's birds and reptiles. Grant is a professional and fun leader who knows how to make your safari the best it can be.

This enigmatic and endangered land is home to some of the world's most unusual mammals, birds, and reptiles, such as the fantastic Parson's Chameleon. Encounter over 20 lemurs and over 150 species of birds. Indri, sifakas, dwarf lemurs and many others mammals are delightful to watch and photograph. Because October is the most active courtship season, it is perfect for wildlife viewing. No other Madagascar tour has such an itinerary, including two nights at beautiful Relais de la Reine, located in the remote Isalo Massif, three nights at Vakona Lodge, between Perinet and Mantadia national parks, and three nights at the famous Berenty Estates. Enjoy the renowned "Spiny Forest" at Ifaty, then head inland to the Zombitsy Forest. This tour provides the most in-depth experiences in these spectacularly scenic locations. Fraser and Guy receive enthusiastic praise for their quality of leadership. With all of this, plus fantastic night spotting at Raminofana National Park and Ampijiroa Forest Reserve, this is the complete Madagascar adventure!
