Tanzania and Kenya

All our Tanzania and Kenya tours are led by Doug and Gail Cheeseman and will take 18 participants.

Doug and Gail Cheeseman have been leading safaris to Tanzania and Kenya since 1978. They know and love it well. With just four people in each of the nine-seater, pop-top Landcruisers, you will have plenty of space and flexibility for viewing and photographing wildlife. Our goal is to spend the maximum time in the field, starting early and ending late, often taking picnic lunches to avoid the long noon-time drive back to the lodge. Lots of choices will suit your varied interests, such as walks in bird-rich areas or a cultural photo session in a local village. Our Tanzanian and Kenyan resident naturalist/drivers, who have led many safaris with Doug and Gail, will assure the best possible wildlife experiences in this truly incredible region!

East Africa is Gail and Doug's favorite destination with its vast savanna habitats vibrant with life. Zebras, giraffes, and gazelles are nursing young, while thousands of newborn Wildebeest calves run across the plains aside their mothers, attracting many predators. Flocks of European White Storks and Abdim's Storks winter in Tanzania joining the colorful resident birds. We'll enjoy the seasonal wealth of wildlife in Tanzania's Southern Serengeti and other rich areas in Tanzania, and then delight in the diversity of Kenya's highlands, lakes, arid lands, and famous Rift Valley. The stretch Land Cruisers with covered poptops are superb for wildlife viewing and with only four participants per vehicle, this safari offers flexibility and fabulous photo ops. When the Cheesemans started leading East African safaris in 1978 they didn't dream that they would still be going thrity years later, but with sixty species of mammals, amazing reptiles, and over 300 species of birds, how could anyone resist?

Our Northern Prime Time Safari in Tanzania includes "The Great Migration" in Tanzania's northern Serengeti where conditions are right for the best wildlife action, especially Cheetah hunting Thomson's Gazelles. Scenic kopjes (rocky outcroppings) harbor predators and are fascinating to explore when abundant herds are present in the vicinity. Vast herds of Wildebeest and Zebra travel through as they migrate north to the Masai Mara. We will spend two days in the Ngorongoro Crater where lion prides, hyena clans, and jackal families, uninhibited by vehicles, carry on their interesting interactions. With both fresh and alkaline lakes in the crater, the waterbirds and landbirds are very abundant. Ndutu, our most favorite place on the planet, is a less-traveled area with rare small mammals, such as Wildcat, Honey Badger, Bat-eared Fox, Side-striped Jackal, Serval, and even Caracal. We also visit Olduvai Gorge in the impressive Rift Valley where the Leakeys found the famous hominid remains.

Our Northern Prime Time Safari in Kenya is the definitive short safari for wildlife enthusiasts, with six days on Kenya's side of the Serengeti ecosystem at the peak of the Migration in the Masai Mara, including night drive opportunities in the Mara Triangle. Herds of Wildebeests and Burchell's Zebras move across the Mara River stalked by Lions and Nile Crocodiles, while Thomson's and Grant's gazelles are hunted by Cheetah. The wildlife photography is simply incredible. Experience fantastic game drives at Samburu on the Uaso Nyiro River with unique Grevy's Zebras, Gerenuk, and Beisa Oryx; plus amazing elephant behavior as they come down from the hills to drink at mid-day. We'll also experience Lake Nakuru in the Rift Valley, and the well protected forest around Mountain Lodge at the base of Mount Kenya. The mammal and bird diversity is guaranteed to impress!

Our safari concentrates on the unique ecosystems of the Central Kalahari and Moremi Game Reserves, and Chobe National Park in Botswana. We then cross the mighty Zambezi River to Zambia to visit Victoria Falls, one of the seven wonders of the world. In Moremi take an early morning boat trip in the famous Okavango Delta to discover waterbirds and Sitatunga, a rare aquatic antelope. We will visit vast Kalahari Game Reserve that covers about 52,000 square km and is reputed to be the second largest conservation area in the world. Another boat trip is planned on the great Chobe River, featuring herds of elephants that come from the hills to drink and bathe in the late afternoon. The diverse landscapes we will visit are home to all the large animals - like elephants, giraffe, hippos, crocodiles, the big cats, and especially many special antelopes found no where else. The bird diversity is high and behavior is easy to watch in the open countryside. Each safari member will have a window seat in the spacious stretch Landcruiser. We will enjoy "semi-luxurious" mobile camping in Botswana with a full camp staff to take care of all the details. Wildlife and Culture In and Around the Great Rift Valley

Ethiopia is one of Africa's premier birding destinations, due to its large species list of around 850 birds that includes the greatest concentration of endemics in all of Africa. Our trip is timed during the winter migration when large numbers of European birds are funneling through Ethiopia to points farther south. The highlands, which dominate the country, are bisected by the Rift Valley, and fall away to arid desert and bushlands in the north, south and east, and to moist woodlands in the west. Ethiopia’s diverse landscape of mountains, savannas, forests, marshland, and lakes support not only many bird species, but also mammal species, such as Gelada Baboon and other monkeys, Beisa Oryx, gazelles, Mountain Nyala, and the very endangered Abyssinian Wolf. We will explore Awash National Park and Lake Langano in the great Rift Valley. Other unique areas include Metahara Lake surrounded by black lava rock, the forests around Wondo Genet and Debre Libanos, Bale National Park with its high biodiversity, and the high Senetti Plateau above tree-line.
