General Information

The Kapitan Khlebnikov is a polar-class icebreaker (Ice Class LL3), combining power and technology with creature comforts. It was originally designed for the rigors of northern Siberia and is one of the few vessels of its kind. It is propelled by diesel-electric engines with 24,000 total horsepower and can cruise at 15 knots in open water. The Kapitan Khlebnikov can carry 112 guests and 70 staff and crew. It has four fully enclosed lifeboats with a capacity of 184 people. There is a clinic with licensed doctor onboard.

There are 54 first-class outside cabins and suites, all with private facilities, large windows, desk, hair dryer, robes, and large closets. Standard Twin cabins have one fixed berth and one convertible sofa bed. Triple cabins have the same as the Twin plus a third pull-down berth. All suites have a bedroom with a double bed and separate sitting room with sofa bed, television and DVD player.

Landings and cruising are made possible by a fleet of six Mark V HD (heavy duty) Zodiacs. The maximum capacity for the Mark V Zodiac is 15, however, depending on weather conditions, we will generally cruise with just ten passengers per Zodiac. The Kapitan Khlebnikov is also equipped with two Russian MI-2 helicopters for ice reconnaissance, itinerary or landing reconnaissance, transfers to the Emperor Penguin rookery, and aerial sightseeing. The helicopters hold approximately 10 passengers and crew. Depending on operational constraints and at the discretion of the ship, charter flights for individual passengers may be possible at additional cost.

Days at sea are enhanced by the ship's onboard amenities, including a heated indoor swimming pool, exercise room, and sauna. The theater-style auditorium is perfect for staff presentations. In the lounge, you will find a well-stocked bar, open late afternoon and evenings, plus a 24-hour self-serve station for coffee, tea, and hot chocolate. Meals are served in two comfortable dining rooms. Moving around the ship is made easier by the passenger elevator.
